Supreme Court struck down the Electoral Bonds Scheme.

In a landmark judgement delivered on 15.02.2024, the Supreme Court has struck down the Electoral Bonds Scheme implemented by the Narendra Modi government. A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, stated that “contributions made by companies under Electoral Bonds Scheme are purely business transactions made with the intent of the securing benefits in return.” The judgement has stated that “political funding through Electoral Bonds promoted corruptions. It is also done for favour to be returned by the ruling party by way of policy changes or getting licenses”, noted the judgement. Undoubtedly, the system of Electoral Bonds has enabled the big corporates to give political donations to the ruling party for getting massive benefits from the government. BSNLEU welcomes this judgement of the Supreme Court.
