AGR Dues case - Supreme Court judgement gives relief to Vodafone Idea.

On 27th October, 2025, the Supreme Court delivered a judgement in favour of Vodafone Idea in the AGR dues case. The judgement has allowed the government to reassess Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues. In it's judgement, the Supreme Court has stated that, the judgement is given keeping into consideration that, the government is having 49% shareholding in Vodafone Idea. AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) is a methodology, based on which the DoT collects Licence Fee, Spectrum Charge, etc., from the telecom companies. There was a dispute between the DoT and the telecom companies regarding the calculation of the AGR. The DoT said that non-core revenue like rent, interest, etc., should be included for calculating the AGR. But, the private telecom companies did not agree to this. The matter went upto the Supreme Court and in 2019, the Supreme Court delivered a judgement in favour of the government. According to this judgement, Vodafone Idea had to pay Rs.58,000 crore to the government. But, Vodafone Idea continued with it's legal battle. Vodafone Idea is facing an extremely difficult financial condition and the latest judgement of the Supreme Court is viewed as the one that will give relief to it.
