[email protected]It was on this day in 1919, the British army, led by Brigadier - General Reginald Dyer, massacred around 1,500 peaceful protesters, in Jallianwallah Bagh, at Amritsar, who had gathered to peacefully protest against the repressions of British imperialism. Many hundreds were wounded. This massacre was a turning point in the Indian freedom struggle. The freedom fighters went on to prove that, repressions cannot suppress their thirst for freedom. On this day, BSNLEU dips its banner and pays it's respectful homage to the Jallianwallah Bagh martyrs.
Today is the 129th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, one of the greatest sons of mother India. Being a great social reformer, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar taught us to fight against all kinds of social and economic inequalities. Being the architect of the Indian Constitution, he has gifted a secular and democratic constitution to our nation. On this day of his birth anniversary, BSNLEU resolves to rededicate itself in the struggle to eradicate all kinds of social and economic inequalities. BSNLEU also vows to protect the secular and democratic characters of our Constitution.

The lock-down imposed by the government is a step in the right direction, to curb the spread of Corona Virus Disease. At the same time, the Central and State government have not cared about the livelihood of the tens of thousands of migrant workers throughout the country. The government very well knows that the migrant workers lead a “hand to mouth” life. With the lock-down in place, these migrant workers are left high and dry, in various parts of the country, without job and food. The government has done pretty little to take care of their livelihood. Yesterday, the migrant workers belonging to UP and Bihar gathered in thousands at Bandera railway station, Mumbai, with the hope that the lock-down would be lifted and they could start moving to their native places. However, their hopes were belied and they were lathi-charged and disbursed by the police.

The employees of West Bengal circle have overwhelmingly responded to the call of the CHQ of BSNLEU, for extending relief to the contract workers. The circle and district unions of West Bengal have taken very good efforts, as a result of which 1,250 comrades have given the donation. The donated amount comes to Rs.11.5 lakh. Now, the circle union has called upon the district unions to rush food materials to the contract workers and help them during this lock-down period. Accordingly, Bankura, Purulia, Burdwan, Kathwa, ETR, Kharagpur, Asansol, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Electrical Wing and Durgapur SSAs have organised programmes in which food materials and money have been handed over to the contract workers. CHQ heartily congratulates the West Bengal circle union, as well as the District Unions for their effective implementation of the CHQ call.
Due to the lock-down imposed throughout the country from 25th March, 2020, CHQ office has also been shut down. However, the General Secretary, as well as the office staff, are working from home and the uninterrupted functioning of the CHQ has been ensured. Letters are being written to the Management on important issues and the same are being discussed with officers telephonically. Website updating is being maintained in a lively manner. However, due to the closure of the printing press, on account of the lock-down, the publishing of BSNLEU’s monthly journals, Tele Crusader and BSNL Swar, for the month of April, 2020, has been interrupted. CHQ regrets the same and assures that publication of the journals will resume after the lifting of the lock-down.
Com.P.Abhimanyu, GS, spoke to Shri P.K. Purwar, CMD BSNL telephonically today and discussed the issue of non-payment of wages to the contract workers. The General Secretary explained about the plight of the contract workers and urged upon the CMD BSNL that funds needs to be immediately released by the Corporate Office, to ensure payment of wages to the contract workers, so that their families are saved from starvation during this lock-down period. The CMD BSNL explained about the financial constraints of the Company. At the same time, he assured that he would try his best to release the funds.
