It was on this day 100 years ago, that the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre took place in Amritsar. Colonel Reginald Dyer, a British army officer, carried out this massacre in which, more than1000 innocent civilians were killed and more than 1,500 were injured. This barbarianism by the British imperialists stunned the entire nation. The Jallianwalla Bagh massacre was a turning point in the Indian freedom struggle. Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, returned his ‘Sir title' (knighthood)’, to the British, protesting against the brutal massacre of Indian civilians by the British them. Rabindranath Tagore said “Such mass murderers aren’t worthy of giving any title to anyone." It must also be remembered here that, 21 years later, freedom fighter, Udam Singh, took revenge for the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre. In 1940, Michael O Dwyer, who was the governor of Punjab when the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre took place, was shot dead by Udam Singh at London. It is also significant to remember that, at the time of shooting Michael O Dwyer, Udam Singh changed his name as Ram Mohammed Sigh Azad. Thereby, Udam Singh wanted to represent Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism, to pay tributes to the freedom fighters of these relegions, who had laid down their lives for the freedom of our motherland. While paying our respectful homage to the Jallianwalla Bagh martyrs, as well as to freedom fighter Udam Singh, we pledge to carry forward the spirit of the freedom fighters.
Militant struggles are going on in many circles, demanding immediate payment of 6 months’ wage arrears to the contract workers and also opposing the retrenchment of contract workers, as per the direction of the Corporate Office.
The CHQ of BSNLEU heartily congratulates both BSNLEU and BSNLCCWF comrades of these circles.
